Gadolinium

California Drug Recall Attorneys

Gadolinium is a contrast agent that is administered to patients who undergo an MRI. When gadolinium is injected into a patient’s veins, it accumulates in abnormal tissue, which allows radiographers to detect any tumors or abnormal growths. This ultimately helps doctors provide more accurate diagnoses and subsequent treatment. After the MRI is completed, gadolinium is excreted through the kidneys. However, patients who have kidney issues prior to gadolinium injection have been shown to experience worsening symptoms and even a potentially deadly disease called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

The Dangers of Gadolinium

Because patients with impaired kidney function are not able to sufficiently remove waste from their bloodstream, toxic reactions to the contrast agent began surfacing. The worsening of kidney problems was first discovered in 1997. Eight years later, gadolinium was linked to NSF in patients who were already experiencing issues with their kidneys.

About NSF

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a form of fibrosis, or scarring. It is most visible in the form of skin lesions, where a patient’s skin tightens and hardens, making it difficult to move. NSF can also cause a tightening in the connective tissues around the major organs such as the abdomen, stomach and diaphragm. This can make it hard to breathe and may impair essential organ function. The results can be debilitating and even fatal. The hardening itself causes mobility issues which can cause falls resulting in broken bones and lacerations.

The symptoms of NSF include:

  • Rapid, unforeseen hypertension (high blood pressure) before skin lesions appear
  • Patches of skin that are swollen or itchy
  • Hardening and tightening of the skin
  • Yellow spots on the whites of the eyes
  • Stiffness in joints and trouble moving or straightening the arms, hands, legs or feet
  • Pain deep in you ribs or hip bones
  • Muscle weakness

In some cases, it can take up to 18 months after injection for NSF symptoms to surface. In other cases, it can take just days. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for NSF.
